The Brazilian coast was a major large-scale whaling ground since the 1600's. Brazilian whalers conducted shore-based whaling from stations called armações.
Offshore waters played an important role in the American whaling industry. Long Island whaling companies in particular frequented the Brazil Banks region for its whaling grounds. Yankee whaleships also depending on Brazil for supplies, services, and crew members, which contributed to settlement patterns of Brazilians in the US.
Today, these whaling records can give us a better understanding of whale recovery in the western South Atlantic.
