Finding
Your Way, Navigation at Sea

The Whaling Museum on Main Street in
Cold Spring Harbor opened its new special exhibition,
“Finding Your Way: Navigation at Sea”,
on September 21, 2004.
Navigation is the process of determining
where you are in the ocean and getting you to where you
want to be.
Many of the techniques used by the whale
ships of the 1800’s remain in use today. Others have
been largely replaced by electronics, but remain useful
and reliable for today’s navigator.
This exhibit will touch on how to measure
latitude and longitude and how to use a compass and chip
log for dead reckoning. Visitors will explore and try out
classic navigation techniques and the scientific principles
which underlie them, gaining along the way a fresh appreciation
for the sophistication of the seemingly primitive whaling
industry of over a century ago.
Learn how the Cold Spring Harbor whalemen
found their way home.
The exhibit will be open through August
of 2005. The Whaling Museum, located on route 25A in Cold
Spring Harbor, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00
A.M. to 5:00 P.M. For further information call 631-367-3418; www.cshwhalingmuseum.org. |
