Museum Programs and NY State Learning Standards

The whaling Museum’s programs and workshops correlate with NY State learning standards in the following ways:

  • Coordinating all curriculum areas.
  • Problem solving with connections to whaling and real life in the 19th century.
  • Interconnectedness of people and their environments as explored through science, social studies, math and language arts.

Math Science and Technology Social studies
Students will use deductive and inductive reasoning to solve problems that existed in 19th century whaling days as well as using critical thinking to address environmental issues that exist today. They will explore explanations of natural phenomena through interaction with museum staff, teachers and students.19th century technology will be explained by using 21st century technology (computer displays and interactive exhibits). Our programs touch on major historical themes and turning points in US history as well as specific themes related to NY history with a focus on Long Island. Information will be presented on 19th century whaling as an industry and its impact on the economics of the time period.
Arts
Students will create original works using tools and materials indigenous to 19th century whalemen. They will observe sailors works of art and understand cultural and environmental influences to these works.
