COLD SPRING HARBOR, NY

Events & exhibits
for all ages, all year!
We invite students in grades 3-12 to write an original story about this pictured piece of sea glass. Sea glass is found along shorelines, having begun as discarded glass items on beaches. Through the years, ocean waves polish and tumble glass to form frosted gems. In line with The Whaling Museum’s annual Sea Glass Festival, we invite students of Nassau & Suffolk Counties to imagine what story the pictured object tells. Winners will be highlighted at the Festival on July 21, 2024 and published in TBR News Media. There are three categories - Grades 3-5 (500 words max), Grades 6-8 (750 words max), and Grades 9-12 ( 1000 words max). Entries are judged on originality and creative expression. Due April 30, 2024.

Judging
  • What will catch our judges' eyes?
    • Writers should present an engaging, unique, and imaginative story which ties to the image of sea glass we provided.
      • Judges will prioritize:
        • Originality and creative expression. Create a unique story, plot, and character!
        • Relevance to the prompt. Tie back to the sea glass shard we showed you.
        • Story structure: How will you shape your story?
        • Quality of writing: Check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.! (Follow conventions unless they creatively work in the story).
  • Adults, try to resist editing your child's work: allow their own voices, perspectives, and abilities to shine.
  • Only winners will be notified.
  • All entries will be coordinated by a partnership between The Whaling Museum & TBR News Media. Judging will occur on or about May 1-31, 2025.
