The Gardiner Young Scholars Internship

The Whaling Museum and Education Center is offering an exciting professional development opportunity for aspiring museum and public history professionals. Students will be working under the guidance of Baylee Browning, the Whaling Museum’s Collections and Exhibits Associate to gain experience in the field and complete an independent project.
The Museum’s nationally significant collection of over 6,000 objects and archival holdings stands as a testament to Long Island’s rich maritime heritage rooted in the whaling industry. The Gardiner Young Scholar will help ensure that these historically significant materials are properly cataloged, preserved and made accessible for future generations. Working closely with the Collections and Exhibits Associate, students will gain experience in:
At the conclusion of the internship students will receive $1,600 compensation. This opportunity and the compensation has been provided with the generous support of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation through the Gardiner’s Young Scholars Program.

- Basics of collections preservation and care
- Research

Criteria
- Between 15 - 22 years old
- Able to commit to 100 hours of work between June and August - 4 days per week
- Access to a car or reliable transportation
- Complete a primary project determined in collaboration with the Collections and Exhibits Associate by the conclusion of the internship
- Some knowledge of or interest in maritime or whaling history is a plus but not required
- Follow direct instructions relating to the care of collections
- Follow appropriate procedures relating to collections management and care
- Capable of working independently
- Create and submit a short video presentation on their experience. Complete and submit a timesheet showing hours worked and tasks completed.
