About ZanzibarTanzania’s 885-mile coastline of rich marine and inland waters by the Indian Ocean boasts a unique maritime heritage. A variety of traditional wooden boats, especially logboats, and small ships are still built and used on the island of Zanzibar. The fisheries are one of the main sources of employment.
Historically, whalers sailed from Long Island searching for whales throughout the world’s oceans. Whaling crews stopped in Zanzibar for its offshore whaling grounds of southern whales. With whales driven to the brink of extinction, the Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuary was created in 1979. Today, the waters around Zanzibar are home to a unique population of Humpback whales. Whale watchers observe these whales migrating from the Antarctic to give birth in Tanzanian waters.
