Where Your Support Goes

Whales, which we see as marvelous today, were seen as monstrous for millennia. In fact, the scientific name for whales, cetacean, means “sea monster.”

Legends about mythical sea creatures are universal. From images of mermaids on 30,000-year old cave paintings to every Starbucks cup today, you and I are still tied to the ocean’s everlasting stories.

In the coming year, the Whaling Museum will retell the ocean’s enduring myths in a new special exhibition, Monsters & Mermaids: Legends of the Sea - the first exhibition about folklore on Long Island in 13 years!

We ask for your essential support, which our Board will match, to assist our planning and installation of our new exhibition. Your gift will enable our project to serve 20,000 Long Islanders every year by:

Exploring marine conservation in a new light: Visitors will come face to face with a breathtaking kraken fashioned out of debris from local beaches. In this novel context, who is afraid of whom today?
Addressing present-day social needs on Long Island: In light of the sharp increase in hate crimes on Long Island this year, visitors will reflect on the cultural roots of hate - from sea monster imagery used in in WWII to dehumanize others, to denigrating 18th century Black portrayals of mermaids that shed light on the history of racism.
Exploring our changing understanding of the natural world: A complementary series of tastings, events, and workshops exploring nautical legends will enable visitors of all ages to continue to fathom the sea’s deepest mysteries.

Please help continue our 90-year history presenting the ocean’s most phenomenal stories to you and the next generation of Long Islanders. Our exhibition is just one part of our museum’s year-round activities supporting a vibrant cultural life for adults and children.
