Museum Visit
Our museum welcomes thousands of school children every year, exploring themes about whales and Long Island’s connection to our oceans. Bring your students or homeschoolers to spark students' joy of learning and curiosity in our immersive galleries & hands-on workshop with an organized visit. Carving a scrimshaw box has become a right of passage on Long Island! |
Museum-To-You
Can't make it to the museum? We'll hit the road and bring the museum to you! (Did you know our museum reaches 5,000 participants a year through our Museum-To-You program?) Save on bussing costs and invite a museum educator into your classroom, where students can explore hands-on museum artifacts up close, discuss ideas, and create a craft. Our programs provide quality educational experiences that increase understanding and appreciation of our maritime heritage, and promote lifelong learning. We visit schools, libraries, and community centers throughout the year. |

WHALING: LONG ISLAND & BEYOND
How has the way people viewed whaling and whales changed through time? Come see and explore the artifacts bringing the books Moby Dick and In the Heart of the Sea to life. Students examine our 19th century whaleboat, the only one in NY with its original gear, as an object that tells a story. Students will deepen their perspective of how the whaling industry shaped communities, while inspiring the globe's first environmental movement. Craft: Students carve scrimshaw art on keepsake boxes. Our most popular craft through the years!
