In Memory of Douglas Benney
About Doug
Douglas M. Benney, a Cold Spring Harbor native, died peacefully surrounded by his family on December 13, 2014.
Doug was born in Cold Spring Harbor and often recounted fond memories of life on the Long Island Sound and adventures with his brother and three sisters, and dozen of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. His grandfather, Captain Sam Walters, was an oyster fisherman in Cold Spring Harbor. The Benney homestead on Main Street, just east of the village, was often the center of activity. Douglas Benney was a naval officer and pilot. He had a life long love of the sea and ocean life. He was an avid small boat sailor, as well. Douglas was a supporter of the arts, education, and youth organizations. |

Doug was my great uncle. He had a wonderful, interesting and adventurous life. I loved to listen to him tell of his travels before, during and after the Navy - He was a great storyteller and had the perfect voice for it... many you couldn't believe were true! Certainly they were - you could tell by the glint in his eye and the passion of which he recalled and lived them again. I know my grandmother, Doris, had great love for her little brother too.
It is so comforting to know he and Greg are together.

I would talk to Doug my Uncle every year by phone on his Birthday.
Doug was always upbeat and would tell me with pride what his family was doing.
