WHATThe Poster Contest promotes youth appreciation and respect for recreational boating and the message that safe boating is always fun boating. Chosen artwork will be displayed in The Whaling Museum's education workshop for the public. This contest is a partnership between The Greater Huntington Council of Yacht & Boating Clubs & The Whaling Museum. 2021 POSTER THEMEBoating Safely Saves Lives Artwork should illustrate how safe boating through education, on the water skills, and proper use of equipment saves lives. Posters may include a combination of these Boater Safety Ideas or those of your choice: -Wear PFD (personal safety device) -Wear proper closed shoes -Check weather forecast -Have something to bail-out water if boat floods -Have lights to use at night -Obey channel markers and navigational aids -Don’t overload the boat -Obey No Wake Zone markers -Avoid rocks & shallow water -Have VHF radio onboard -Have flotation ring/cushions for “man–overboard” rescue -Have distress flag/flares on board -Under 13yr: Have Type I, II, III or appropriate type V PDF on board with a whistle attached -Under 12 wear PDF at all times w/whistle -Obey channel markers and navigational aids -Watch for power/sail boats -After sunset, have a light to warn boats. -Report boating accidents to authorities. WHO CAN ENTERThe Poster Contest is open to children ages 5–18, which is divided into three age groups:
PRIZESAwards will include gift certificates to local businesses, 1-year family memberships to the Whaling Museum, and Huntington Lighthouse tours. Chosen artwork will also be displayed for the public! Rules
