WHAT

The Poster Contest promotes youth appreciation and respect for recreational boating and the message that safe boating is always fun boating.

Chosen artwork will be displayed in The Whaling Museum's education workshop for the public.

This contest is a partnership between The Greater Huntington Council of Yacht & Boating Clubs & The Whaling Museum.

2021 POSTER THEME

---

Boating Safely Saves Lives
Artwork should illustrate how safe boating through education, on the water skills, and proper use of equipment saves lives.

Posters may include a combination of these Boater Safety Ideas or those of your choice:

-Wear PFD (personal safety device)
-Wear proper closed shoes
-Check weather forecast
-Have something to bail-out water if boat floods
-Have lights to use at night
-Obey channel markers and navigational aids
-Don’t overload the boat
-Obey No Wake Zone markers
-Avoid rocks & shallow water
-Have VHF radio onboard
-Have flotation ring/cushions for “man–overboard” rescue
​-Have distress flag/flares on board
-Under 13yr: Have Type I, II, III or appropriate type V PDF on board with a whistle attached
-Under 12 wear PDF at all times w/whistle
-Obey channel markers and navigational aids
-Watch for power/sail boats
-After sunset, have a light to warn boats.
​-Report boating accidents to authorities.

Drop off your poster + entry form to The Whaling Museum at 301 Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor on Saturdays & Sundays only from May 1 - May 16, 12-4pm. 

​Remember, posters must be received by 4pm on Sunday, May 16.

WHO CAN ENTER

The Poster Contest is open to children ages 5–18, which is divided into three age groups: 

• Ages 5 – 8 
• Ages 9 – 13 
• Ages 14 – 18

PRIZES

---

Awards will include gift certificates to local businesses, 1-year family memberships to the Whaling Museum, and Huntington Lighthouse tours. Chosen artwork will also be displayed for the public!

Rules

---

1. Posters will be judged on the theme, message and artistic representation.
2. Artist’s age is determined to be the day the poster is submitted for judging.
3. Each entry must be on poster board or heavyweight construction paper; size 15”x20” or 22”x28”.
4. All media welcome. Posters may be sketched lightly with pencil, but the result must be in color suitable for photography.
5. Professional illustrations, photos, copyrighted or trademark material, purchased or computer-generated are not allowed & will disqualify the entry.
6. Contest entry forms must be complete, legible, and attached to the back of their poster.
7. Posters must not be folded but may be rolled.
8. Only one entry per person is allowed. All entries become the property of The Greater Huntington Council of Yacht and Boating Clubs, which reserves the right to display and reproduce.
9. Contest entries must be delivered to The Whaling Museum on Saturdays & Sundays, May 1 - May 16 from 12-4pm at 301 Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor.
10. Posters must be received by 4pm on Sunday, May 16, 2021, for judging.
11. First, Second and Third Place Winners will be announced for each age category on Sunday, May 23.​
