Ocean Science Workshop

In honor of Earth Day, see how a 3D Enviroscape coastal model can help us discover the negative effects of run-off into the Sound from fertilizers, pesticides, pet waste, bacteria, and oil. Mix up an alternative cleaning product at home with our kits.

Sailor's Valentine

​Did you know that whalers brought home a special souvenir for their loved ones called a Sailor’s Valentine? Learn the history of this unique craft and design a Sailor’s Valentine for yourself or a loved one. Kit includes: shells, paper plate, and decorative images.  You'll need: liquid craft glue and a paint brush.

​Food for Thought: Mug-Cake Edition
Roll up your sleeves and join us as we travel back in time to a Victorian kitchen.  Discover what kinds of treats and sweets Long Islanders enjoyed 150 years ago, and how they kept food fresh before refrigeration.  Cook up a modern version of a historic recipe in your very own microwave with a mug cake kit from the museum.

Explore scrimshaw, a true American folk art. See examples from our collection and discover how whalers carved teeth, bones and baleen into beautiful works of art.  Sketch, carve, and ink a “fauxshaw” keepsake box.
