Know these terms before you head out for treasure!

  • Avast - a command to stop doing whatever you’re doing immediately.  This word comes from the Dutch hou’vast (hold on) and is similar to the Italian word basta.
  • All Hands on Deck - all crew members are needed to assemble on the top deck of the ship.  This command is usually given in situations of trouble.  The word “hand” here means sailor, not the body part.
  • Anchor’s Aweigh - this is said to let the captain know that the anchor is no longer touching the bottom of the sea and that the ship is free to move
  • Davy Jones’ Locker - a metaphor for the bottom of the sea.  The origin of this phrase is unclear.  The earliest written mention of this phrase is found in Daniel Defoe’s book Four Years Voyages of Capt. George Roberts published in 1726
  • First Mate - also called the Chief Mate, this person is second in command on a ship after the Captain.
